Personbedömning. Pilot and Air Traffic Controller staff selection
Utifrån en egen drygt 10-årig erfarenhet som privatflygare kom jag 1986 att börja arbeta som flygpsykolog inom SIAP (Scandinavian Institute of Aviation Psychology), numera SIAP AB. På den tiden var den huvudsakliga uppdragsgivaren flygbolaget SAS som sedan många år redan använt SIAP som samarbetspartner när det gällde selektion av pilotkandidater till bolaget. SIAP samarbetade också med Trafikflyghögskolan i Ljungbyhed kring selektion av elever till skolan och som färdigutbildade också till bolagstjänst inom SAS.
Utifrån min erfarenhet som privatflygare kom jag att delta i ett flerårigt projekt – ”Pre-course” – inom SAS, som på den tiden erbjöd en veckas till 10 dagars kurs (och selektion i ett andra steg) inom SAS Flight Academy, vilken bl a innebar möjligheter till en mycket grundläggande simulatorträning innan eleverna efter godkännande fortsatte till grundläggande flygutbildning i USA för att sedan göra sin slutliga professionella flygträning i tung luftfart inom bolaget.
SIAP har också sedan starten 1960 bistått dåvarande Thai Airways Company, numera Thai Airways International Co Ltd, med selektion av piloter och det samarbetet fortgår än idag. Jag fick chansen ansluta mig till det selektionsarbetet 1989 och har sedan dess arbetat för SIAP och Thai Airways International Co Ltd med selektion av Ab Initio Student pilots, Qualified pilots och Air Cadet Student Pilots från The Royal Thai Airforce Academy.
Utifrån erfarenheterna från pilotselektion och pilotträning har SIAP också under åren varit inblandat i personurval och selektion av befäl inom sjöfarten, bl a åt Sweferry, Silja Line och Destination Gotland.
Idag betjänar SIAP också andra flygbolag med personurval/selektion, bl a för Sveriges inrikesflyg BRA flyg samt TUI flyg och Thomas Cook Airlines. Jag har också gjort lämplighets- och urvalsbedömningar för Helicopter Emergency Medical Service- Technical Crew (HTC-crew) inom ambulanshelikopterverksamheten i Visby (Falck/Babcock, numera Avincis) samt Kommunalförbundet Svenskt Ambulansflyg (KSA).
SIAP samarbetar också med Trafikflyghögskolan TFHS i Ljungbyhed (Lunds Universitet) och tidigare också med OSM Aviation Academy, tidigare Scandinavian Aviation Academy, SAA i Västerås kring lämplighetsbedömningar inför pilotutbildning och instruktörsutbildning samt selektion av elever och gör också prövningar för utfärdande av intyg om yrkeshögskolebehörighet för statliga studiemedel för studier vid flygskola.
Jag deltar också i SIAPs samarbete med Aviation Capacity Resources AB (ACR) kring personbedömning av blivande flygtrafikledare.
Pilot selection
Out of my own experience as a private pilot for about 10 years, in 1986 I started working as an Aviation Psychologist within the Scandinavian Institute of Aviation Psychology (SIAP). In those days we principally served Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), who had used SIAP since the 1950´s in the selection of pilots. Along with that SIAP also served Trafikflyghögskolan (TFHS) (the Aviation Academy) run by the Swedish Air Force, Wing F5 in Ljungbyhed in selecting student pilots and after basic training also selecting these students for further commercial and professional training within SAS.
I also joined a many years´ training project for ab initio pilot training – “the Pre-course- project” – offered by SAS which meant a mutual opportunity for trying out what it really meant to become a pilot for the student and a further possibility to find out how the pre-selected group of ab initio student really worked out in practice in ground training and also in simulator training. It was a true advantage for me to have a chance to follow the ab intio students in this training and further on in their real basic flight training in the US, before returning to Sweden and taking on their professional training and type rating within SAS.
SIAP has also, since the start-up of the company in 1960, served Thai Airways Company, nowadays the Thai Airways International Co Ltd, Thailand, in their selection of pilots and this close cooperation still goes on. I had the chance to join this selection procedures as an aviation psychologist in 1989 and have worked there since then, both with selection of Ab Initio Student Pilots, Qualified Pilots and Air Cadet Student Pilots from the Royal Thai Airforce Academy.
Out of the experiences of pilot selection and pilot training SIAP has also been involved in the selection of ship’s officers, for example in Sweferry, Silja Line and Destination Gotland.
Today SIAP serves also other airlines in their pilot selection, among others the Swedish domestic airline BRA flyg, the international TUI and Thomas Cook Airlines. Along with this I have also taken part in the selection of Helicopter Emergency Medical Service Technical crew for the Helicopter Ambulance service in Gotland, Sweden (run by Falck/Babcock, nowadays Avincis) and Kommunalförbundet Svenskt Ambulansflyg (KSA).
SIAP has also for many years cooperated with the Lund University School of Aviation (TFHS) as well as the OSM Aviation Academy, previously the Scandinavian Aviation Academy (SAA) in Hässlö, Västerås concerning the selection of pilot students. SIAP also makes aptitude tests preceding basic flight training and issues certificates for studies supported by the state (student economical support) for training with certified professional training schools.
I am also part of SIAP´s engagement with Aviation Capacity Resources AB (ACR) in the selection of Air Traffic Controllers.
